The Land of the Cherokee

December 18, 2013

I plan to visit the Land of the Cherokee in NC in the next few months to reasearch my historical fictionITullahoma Mud. It will be difficult to gain their trust. I look forward to the visit but have trepidation that they may see me as someone trying to “cash in” on their plight. This is not my intention. I wish to tell their story and will share some of it here on Bird's Blog of Babel. I am working hard to educate myself on their plight pre-Trail of Tears. That is the premise and setting of the novel I am working on that I hope to submit for publication next fall.

The Meaning of Christmas, a History

December 16, 2013

Merry Christmas everybody or if a nonbeliever Happy Holidays from Bird's Blog of Babel! This an equal opportunity page! I posted an interesting history of modern Christmas.

I love Christmas and I am a Christian. I love the spirit of the idea of giving and helping those that are less fortunate. I dislike the fact that this day has been abrogated by the commercial engines that have destroyed what Christmas really is. Even nonbelievers can rejoice during this time. That is because it is an ancient tradition of peoples across time and culture. This time of celebration and giving has its roots that existed long before the birth of the Christ.

December 15, 2013

I posted a series of three posts concerning my WIP historical novel Tullahoma Mud. The featured article is the draft introduction to the book. The other two are background information I am using to write the story. Read these posts to learn about this historical novel I am going to publish. With a little luck!

Jack London and Language Barriers

December 4, 2013

I posted and article by Jack London about the writer’s philosophy of life. “This is for the writer—no matter how much hack-work he is turning out just now—who cherishes ambitions and ideals, and yearns for the time when agriculture newspapers and home magazines no more may occupy the major portion of his visiting list.” I think many of his thoughts are relevant today.

I also wrote a funny article about a ski trip I took in Germany. Two men sitting on a ski life speaking the same language and couldn’t understand each other!

Vampires

November 29, 2013

A study of the vampire phenomenon in today’s fiction writing, even Histotical Fiction. Why is the population of readers so drawn to this meme?  The theme of the mysterious has always been prevalent and powerful. The mythological landscape is broad in its litany.  Some of you might take this discourse as an indictment against Christianity or religion in general.  This assumption is false.  Read the post on my blog page here of Bird's Blog of Babel.

Fast Cars and Bluegrass

November 27, 2013

A short memorial I wrote a few years ago. It’s fun and somewhat true. I use to race motorcycles as a young, dumb, and pliable hellion. I eventually got too bit to race dirt bikes and college put an end to my racing career. I’ve always loved playing music so I melded the two in this short story. Learn how I connect Bill Monroe and Dale Earnhardt on my blog.

 The Cosmogonic Cycle

November 24, 2013

This subject has always fascinated me since I was young. Most if not all cultures have some mythology explaining creation. I believe that these oral tradition in ancient cultures lead to modern day story telling. I will have more on this later about enlightenment and the advent of the novel. So stay tune and read my blog posts!

Bird's Blog of Babel Created!

November 22, 2014

I chose this day to start creating a Bird's Blog of Babel to share my thoughts and writings on a cornucopia of subjects including Historical Fiction. Since this marks the 50th anniversary of the Kennedy assassination I thought I would write about that horrible day. I was six years old at the time and remember it well. I know this story has been beaten to death but felt compelled to add my two cents. My article is in the Blog section.
